Colombo weather is characteristically temperate with tropical rainforest influences; this is mainly due to the geography of the city, with its landscape made up of a combination of land and water. Colombo is the capital and largest city of Sri Lanka, positioned in the western coast of the island, its proximity to the Indian Ocean, having an immense impact on the patterns of weather in Colombo.
Colombo could rightly be described as the ‘Venice of Asia’, thanks to the many canals that run through it, which undeniably influence the disposition of Colombo weather, More ever, the landscape of the heart of the city is largely defined by the 65-hectare (160-acre) Beira Lake. Water seems to be a permanent feature when Colombo weather is taken into consideration; this is rightly so as both the northern an north-eastern borders of the city are defined by the meeting point of the Kelani river and the Indian Sea. Locals have named this the Modera (mōdara in Sinhala), which translated in English means river delta.
Tropical weather in Colombo prevails for most of the year, with dominating conditions veering towards the hot and humid type. Moreover, Colombo weather is also characterised by a distinct lack of a clearly identifiable season. The only main difference to the weather in Colombo is the occurrence of the two rainy seasons. Intense monsoon rains occur between May and August, and appear again between October and January.
From the months of March through to April average daily temperatures hover at around 31 degrees Celsius, while humidity levels remain at decisively high levels, a factor attributed to the heavy rainfall the city experiences. During the drier winter months average daily temperatures are 22 degrees Celsius. Annual precipitation for the city is 2,400 mm.
Apparently the world’s media are unable to agree whether the recent extreme weather situations in countries such as Australia and Sri Lanka are due to El Nina or the cumulative effects of what is loosely called global warming or the Greenhouse effect.
